Gucci began in Florence in 1921 as a leather-goods house, and its eyewear still carries that heritage: rich, tactile materials and hardware that reads as jewelry rather than trim. The house codes are unmistakable — the interlocking GG, the green-red-green Web stripe, gold-tone metal at the temple — but the strongest Gucci frames wear them with a certain restraint, letting the shape do most of the talking.

That shape tends to run bold. Expect thick, deeply polished acetates in black, Havana tortoise and translucent jewel tones; oversized square and cat-eye silhouettes; and metal frames with a vintage, faintly aristocratic line. Some of the larger, more curved sun shapes have limits with stronger prescriptions, so our opticians confirm what works before you commit.
