Do you accept both medical and vision insurance?
Yes. Because Dr. Michele L. Domiano provides both medical eye care and routine vision care, we accept both kinds of coverage. The plan that pays for your annual exam and new glasses is usually not the plan that pays for a red eye visit or a diabetic eye exam, and many patients carry one of each.
Whichever plan applies, our knowledgeable staff in Old Forge and Clarks Summit is experienced in working with insurers and will submit the claim directly on your behalf — no forms to fill out, no reimbursements to chase.

What’s the difference between vision insurance and medical insurance?
They are not the same thing, and the difference matters. Vision insurance is a wellness benefit designed to provide routine eye care, prescription eyewear, and other vision-related services at a reduced cost — your yearly exam, a frame or lens allowance, a contact lens supply.
Medical insurance protects you against the cost of eye injuries and eye disease. If Dr. Domiano is diagnosing or treating a medical condition — dry eye, glaucoma monitoring, a diabetic eye exam, a red or painful eye, flashes and floaters — that visit is billed to your medical plan, just like a visit to any other doctor.
In plain terms: a routine exam with no medical complaint bills to your vision plan; a visit for a medical eye problem bills to your medical plan, even if we check your vision along the way. If both apply to one visit, we’ll walk you through how it is billed.
How do I use my vision benefits at Domiano Eye Care?
Let us know which plan you have when you request an appointment, then bring your insurance card and a photo ID. We verify your benefits before you are seen, so you know what is covered before you make any exam or eyewear decisions.
Most vision plans include an annual comprehensive eye exam plus an allowance toward frames and lenses, or toward contact lenses. Many also help with lens upgrades such as anti-glare coatings or prescription sunglasses. Details vary by plan and employer, so we’ll explain your specific coverage and how to make the most of it in our optical boutique.
Do vision benefits expire?
In most cases, yes. Most vision plans run on a calendar year, reset on January 1, and work on a use-it-or-lose-it basis: an unused exam or frame allowance does not roll over. You have already paid for those benefits, so letting them lapse means leaving money on the table.
If you haven’t used this year’s benefits, book before year-end — appointments in Old Forge and Clarks Summit fill quickly in the final weeks of the year. If your plan just renewed, booking early means better availability and the widest selection of in-stock frames. Not sure where your plan year stands? Call us and we’ll check.
Do you accept FSA and HSA?
Yes. Flexible spending accounts (FSA) and health savings accounts (HSA) can be used at both offices for eye exams, prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses, and contact lenses. Many patients pair them with insurance — vision plan for the exam and base frame, FSA or HSA for lens upgrades, a second pair, or sunglasses.
We also accept cash and major credit cards. FSA funds typically reset at year-end too, so check your balance before the year is out.
What if I don’t have insurance?
You are welcome here. We see self-pay patients at both offices, and our team can quote current exam pricing over the phone — just call the office closest to you. Uninsured patients from Old Forge, Clarks Summit, and the greater Scranton area receive the same thorough exam, technology, and unhurried attention as everyone else.
If cost is a concern, mention it when you call and we’ll talk through your options for exams and eyewear before you commit to anything.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Domiano Eye Care take VSP?
- Yes. VSP is one of the vision plans we accept at both our Old Forge and Clarks Summit offices, along with EyeMed, Davis Vision, NVA, and VBA. Bring your card to your appointment and we will verify your VSP benefits before your visit.
- Do you accept Medicare for eye exams?
- Yes, we accept Medicare. Keep in mind that Medicare is medical insurance: it generally covers eye care for medical conditions such as diabetic eye exams, glaucoma monitoring, and dry eye, but not routine vision exams or eyeglasses. If you also have a separate vision plan, we can bill that for the routine portion. Call us and we will explain what your coverage includes.
- Is a contact lens fitting covered by vision insurance?
- Often partially. Most vision plans treat the contact lens fitting and evaluation as a separate service from the routine eye exam, and coverage ranges from a copay to a partial allowance to no coverage, depending on your plan and lens type. Bring your card and we will check exactly what your plan pays toward the fitting and your lens supply before we begin.
- Can I use my HSA for glasses?
- Yes. HSA and FSA funds can be used for prescription eyeglasses, prescription sunglasses, contact lenses, and eye exams at both offices. Many patients combine them with a vision plan — using insurance for the exam and base frame, and their HSA or FSA for lens upgrades or a second pair.
- Do you accept Geisinger?
- Yes. Geisinger is one of the medical plans we accept, alongside Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal, and Medicare. Because it is medical coverage, it typically applies to visits for eye disease, injury, or medical eye conditions rather than routine exams and eyewear. Call either office and we will confirm your specific Geisinger plan.
- How do I know what my plan covers?
- The easiest way is to let us check. Give us your plan name and member ID when you schedule — Old Forge 570-451-2020 or Clarks Summit 570-585-0000 — and our staff will verify your benefits before your appointment and explain what is covered for the exam, frames, lenses, and contacts. You can also call the member services number on the back of your insurance card.
