Oakley began in 1975 with a motorcycle grip. Founder Jim Jannard developed a rubber compound he called Unobtainium that grips harder when wet, and when he turned to eyewear the same obsession with materials came with him. Oakley frames are molded from O Matter, a lightweight, stress-resistant material that holds its shape through heat and impact; the nose pads and earsocks are Unobtainium; and the lenses are cut from Plutonite, an impact-resistant material that blocks UV across the full lens. The Three-Point Fit holds the frame at the bridge and the sides of the head, keeping the lenses aligned without pressure points.

Even the lifestyle frames — the ones you'd wear to a cookout rather than a trail — are built to that standard.

Prizm is Oakley's lens technology, introduced in 2014, that fine-tunes which wavelengths of light pass through the lens to sharpen contrast and color for a specific environment. Rather than dimming everything equally, a Prizm lens brings up the details you need to see — the texture of asphalt, the break of a green, the shape of a wave — and lets the noise recede.

If you have one activity you do a lot, the sport-specific tint earns its place. If not, an everyday Prizm tint is a very good all-purpose sunglass lens.

Oakley splits roughly into two families. Lifestyle frames — the squared Holbrook, the retro Frogskins, the wide Gascan — look like classic sunglasses built to Oakley's material standard and suit everyday wear. Sport frames — the Radar, Flak, Sutro and Jawbreaker among them — wrap closer to the face, vent to reduce fog, and in many cases take interchangeable lenses; they suit cycling, running, ball sports and anyone who wants full coverage. On the optical side, Oakley's clear-lens frames bring the same lightweight materials to everyday glasses — a good fit for anyone hard on their frames.

Yes. Oakley optical frames are made up with your prescription in single vision, progressive or occupational designs, and Oakley makes prescription sun lenses — including many Prizm tints — for a large share of its sunglass range. The one honest caveat is curvature: the more wrapped the sport frame, the narrower the prescription range it can accept, so strong prescriptions may steer you toward a flatter lifestyle style.
